International Unit Layout Design and Cultural Considerations, 2009 AIA National Convention
Thursday, April 30, 2009
4-6pm

Residential design is affected by numerous factors, with one essential factor being unit layout. With each project, differences in culture and the priorities within them must be learned and adopted for the design of residential layouts. Spanning the globe, this session will focus on current multi-family, high-rise projects in Chicago, New York, Italy, Romania and Turkey, concentrating on how the subtlest of differences in society, culture and lifestyle lead to differences in their design. Case studies will include a 20-story building on New York City’s Upper West Side; an 86-unit, 40-story condo on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, that includes 15 floor plan options; and a 27-unit project in Milan, including 3-story townhomes and duplexes, slated to exceed Europe’s sustainability guides by 30%.
